"If you can talk about it, why paint it"

          Francis Bacon

Steve Hendrickson     paintings

My art work at this time involves painting, drawing, and some photography.... my photographic work tends to transcend the predictable and lead to an other worldly experience....my painting and drawing subject matter is mainly concentrated on figurative, portraiture, and abstract work...

My paintings are based in a representational framework which I push through a cubistic or surrealistic or impressionistic portal...the object is not always the subject....I believe that strictly representational work leans more towards illustration and does not capture the soul or imprint of the artist...I try to capture the essence of the model (object)....I primarily push through the front door of representational work and into the back rooms of a more stylized substantive essence, content, and perspective.

I was born in San Bernardino, California, September 21, 1946. I am primarily self-taught.

The main focus of my current work is involved with variations exploring the transformational and conceptual aspects of the human figure and portraiture, as well as the metaphysical, meditative transfixing qualities and constructs of abstract work....the pull of an emotional portal (My abstract work is primarily directed to reach within your emotional substrate and connect with the spiritual, transcendent, metaphysical content within....bypassing your rational analytical screening to engage your subconscious).

There is an undefined area, or domain, where I choose to work, where the human landscape is mutable, where essence is the subject.

Of the artists I have studied, I am attracted to the disassociation, perspectives, and symbolic directions the cubists, surrealists, and abstract expressionists have taken......Especially the development and evolution of their vocabulary and language."...."If you can talk about it, why paint it" Francis Bacon...
